Pelosi Hits Back at GOP’s Anti-IVF Bill, Accusing Them of Ignorance

( – The Alabama Supreme Court decided on February 16 that frozen embryos are human beings, which means someone may need to answer for the countless fertilized eggs that the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) industry destroys each year. Democrats have been critical of what they’re calling a hypocritical response from members of the Right — especially in the wake of two new bills. One aims to give all unborn babies the constitutional right to life, while the other seeks to protect IVF treatments, which could create an ugly loophole. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is accusing GOP members of being ignorant, saying that they all should get “a lesson in the birds and the bees.”

Pelosi made the statement on February 29, when she joined anchor Chris Hayes on MSNBC’s “All In.” The host pointed to Republicans’ recent backing of the Life at Conception Act, which seeks to give “equal protection for the right to life” to all babies regardless of whether they’ve yet been born. The act moves to constitutionally define all stages of homo sapiens as “human being[s].” The classification would protect all babies at the moment of fertilization, including human clones and embryos created in test tubes for the purposes of IVF fertility treatments. The bill currently has 125 sponsors, all of whom are Republicans.

Hayes noted the implications of the proposed legislation and asked Pelosi if GOP members understood what was on it, prompting the California senator to restate the bill’s title. She added that “they have to know what that means.” Pelosi claimed lawmakers had additional options, noting that other members of Congress were working to protect IVF treatments specifically via another bill, the Access to Family Building Act.

Pelosi went on to claim that numerous people of faith, including Catholic nuns, told her they believed IVF was a gift from God because it allowed more people to make families. Still, the controversy remains over the fates of countless frozen fertilized eggs.
