Mother Held for Pretending Child Has Cancer to Get Donations

(LibertySons.org) – Parents have a legal and moral obligation to care for their children. When a mother tells people that her child is sick with a fatal disease, people tend to believe them because who would lie about something like that? Ohio police allege they found a woman who was doing exactly that: lying about her daughter having cancer.

On January 9, the Noble County Sheriff’s Office posted a statement on Facebook stating that it had received information five days earlier about potential theft by deception. The tip referenced a child who was allegedly fighting cancer. Multiple organizations in the area had hosted fundraising efforts for the family of the child to help them pay for medical costs. An investigation revealed the little girl did not have cancer.

Detectives arrested Pamela Reed, 41, on January 8 and charged her with a felony count of theft by deception. During an interrogation with detectives, she allegedly admitted that she had lied about her 7-year-old daughter’s medical conditions.

The New York Post reported that an arrest affidavit stated the woman lied to the public in order to get thousands of dollars in donations. She reportedly said her daughter was suffering from acute myeloid leukemia regular seizures, and that she was blind in one eye. Reed also allegedly admitted to officials that she shaved her child’s head in order to make the story more convincing.

The scam was uncovered when a school nurse at the child’s elementary school discovered she wasn’t actually blind in her right eye like Reed claimed. The child had also missed more than 280 hours of school in the 2023-2024 school year because her mother said she had a port implanted for cancer treatments. The nurse called the 7-year-old’s doctor, who said she did not, nor had she ever, had cancer. The physician said all of the documents the mother provided were fake.

Authorities have not said whether Reed’s husband knew the health problems were a lie. Their other two kids were removed from their home, and her bond was set at $50,000.
