McDonald’s Franchise Owner Backed by Dems Wins Key Primary that May Swing Congress Control

( – Democrats hope to win the House in November. The Republican Party currently holds a very slim lead. A race in Oregon could decide which party wins the majority. Democrats are backing the owner of a fast-food franchise.

On May 21, State Rep. Janelle Bynum (D) won the Democratic primary for Oregon’s 5th Congressional District. She will face off against US Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, the sitting congresswoman. Bynum is from Washington, DC originally. She owns four McDonald’s franchises and has served in the Oregon House since January 2017, where she sits on the small business committee.

The Democratic establishment supported Bynum in the primary for the 5th district. The US House Democrats endorsed her and so did Oregon Governor Tina Kotek. She ran against Progressive Jamie McLeod-Skinner, the candidate for the seat in 2022. McLeod-Skinner lost the race by just two points in the last election and was hoping to face off against Chavez-DeRemer again. Voters denied her that chance.

Bynum beat her opponent in fundraising before the primary. She raised over $1 million by the end of April, compared to McLeod-Skinner’s $700,000. The state representative touted her experience during the campaign and her record. She promised that if she’s elected, she will help build more infrastructure in the state, support businesses, and work on the housing crisis.

Republican Chavez-DeRemer managed to flip the district in the last election by approximately 7,000 votes. Her win in 2022 was one of the races that helped the GOP snatch control of the House away from then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). She will now have to hold on to it or risk the Democratic Party getting a leg up in the race for the House majority.

Chavez-DeRemer has already endorsed former President Donald Trump in the 2024 race. She’s called President Joe Biden’s policies a “disaster” for America and has said the country needs someone who will secure the border.

Experts have ranked the race a “toss-up.”
