House GOP Bill Seeks to Overturn Biden’s Climate Corps Plan

(LibertySons.org) – Fiscal responsibility has remained a critical point of contention between Republican and Democratic legislators, especially as inflation has spiraled out of control. Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) believes one of the driving forces of inflation is overspending, like the many climate-based policies and bills pushed through by the Biden Administration. In response, Good introduced the No American Climate Corps Act to defund President Joe Biden’s proposed 20,000-person Climate Corps.

Good garnered 19 Republican co-sponsors on the measure, and House officials referred the legislation to four separate subcommittees. The bill seeks to prohibit Congress from dedicating federal funds to the American Climate Corps or the Justice40 Initiative, a requirement of Executive Order 14008, titled Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad.

Moreover, the Justice40 Initiative defines a US federal government effort to deliver at least 40% of the overall benefits from certain investments to disadvantaged communities regarding clean and affordable energy, transit, and housing; workforce development and training; remediation of existing pollution; and the creation of crucial clean water infrastructures. The administration believed establishing the Climate Corps Initiative could help meet Justice40 goals while creating employment and training opportunities. Good said Biden sought $30 billion for the initiative, according to Fox News.

Yet, Good and other fiscally conservative Republicans argue the sum is a drop in the bucket compared to the $500 billion the administration has spent thus far on its legislative war on climate change, including passage of the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

Left-wing progressive legislators began pushing for the Climate Corps nearly as soon as Biden entered office in 2021, led by firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). She proposed legislation in the House in September to move the program forward while Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) introduced companion legislation in the Senate simultaneously. Good seeks to stop those measures in their tracks.
