Dems Fiercely Pushback Over Netanyahu’s Possible Address to Congress

( – In the realm of current events, it would be hard to find a leader more polarizing than Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Ever since the Iranian-backed terror group Hamas viciously attacked civilians in Israel on October 7, 2023, the PM has orchestrated the retaliation against the group in Gaza. Pro-Palestine and pro-Israel demonstrations vie for media attention around the world, and many on the left in the US have called on President Joe Biden to condemn Netanyahu’s position. Now the Israeli leader is scheduled to address Congress — and some Democrats are none too happy about it.

On Thursday, May 23, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) announced at the Israeli embassy’s annual Independence Day reception that Netanyahu would soon be addressing a joint session of Congress. He went on to say the speech would be “a strong show of support for the Israeli government in their time of greatest need.”

Some Democrats are less enthusiastic about the event. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) simply said no, while Jim Himes (D-CT), the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, said the PM “should be focused on freeing hostages, not on charming legislators.”

Many Dems also called on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to reject the invitation, but it appears that didn’t happen. On Wednesday, he reaffirmed that “our relationship with Israel is ironclad.”

The White House hasn’t commented on the proposed speech, and tensions between President Joe Biden and Netanyahu have increased as the POTUS has paused the shipment of some weapons to Israel in hopes the pressure would lead to a cease-fire. Biden has also denied an Oval Office meeting with the Israeli leader.

Vice President Kamala Harris has spoken out against what she calls a “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza.

While both sides of the political aisle have denounced the arrest warrant applications for Netanyahu and his defense chief, Yoav Gallant, for war crimes by the International Criminal Court — it doesn’t mean everyone on the Left is happy about the PM’s upcoming visit.
