Bob Menendez Now Facing Additional Charges

(LibertySons.org) – In September 2023, Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and his wife, Nadine Menendez, were indicted for bribery. Prosecutors assigned to the Southern District of New York (SDNY) claimed that the pair accepted “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in exchange for the senator’s “power and influence.” The next month, the lawmaker was hit with a superseding indictment for allegedly conspiring to act as a foreign agent for Egypt. But that didn’t mark the end of his legal woes.

On March 5, Reuters reported that an unsealed 18-count indictment revealed more charges against the NJ senator and his wife, adding obstruction of justice to the mix. SDNY prosecutors allege that previous accounts from Menendez regarding mortgage and car payments made by a couple of businessmen for his wife were false. The lawmaker previously said he wasn’t aware of the payments, and when he learned of them, he thought they were loans. However, federal prosecutors believe Menendez not only knew about the payments, but they were bribes.

One of the businessmen, Jose Uribe, recently pleaded guilty to bribery and fraud regarding the alleged car payment. According to reports, investigators also found gold bars and large sums of cash they believe represent bribes for the senator. He claimed it was a stash for emergencies.

Still, the NJ politician claimed his innocence once again, stating he will “prove it no matter how many charges they continue to pile on.” The Associated Press reported that Senator Menendez called the new charges an “abuse of power.” Both the lawmaker and his wife have pleaded not guilty to everything so far.

While Menendez left his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the wake of the first round of charges, the lawmaker refuses to resign from the Upper Chamber — no matter how loud the calls for him to do so.
