White House Accuses GOP of Harassment Over Biden Ghostwriter’s Contempt of Congress

(LibertySons.org) – In yet another case where the Biden administration was not happy with a potential Contempt of Congress charge, a White House lawyer is now stepping in to claim a sitting United States representative has harassed a committee hearing witness.

In a letter to the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan (R-OH), Counsel to the President Edward Siskel accused committee members of treating President Joe Biden’s ghostwriter unfairly. Back in March, the committee asked Mark Zwonitzer, who is tasked with writing Biden’s memoirs, for audio files and notes from his interviews with the president. He refused.

The committee is looking into Biden’s state of mind and competency during interviews with Special Counsel Rober Hur in the course of his investigation into the POTUS’s handling of classified documents. During those interviews, Biden read from notebooks from Zwonitzer and also disclosed that he had talked about classified issues with the writer.

Due to Zwonitzer’s refusal to comply with the subpoena in March, the committee is now considering a contempt charge against him similar to the one against Attorney General Merrick Garland. In his case, the Justice Department refused to enforce the contempt charge. The House may seek to charge him with inherent contempt instead.

In his letter Siskel turns the tables on Republicans, claiming, “The Committee’s actions are an obvious example of the very weaponization of government for political purposes that you claim to decry.” He goes on to complain that Zwonitzer is a private citizen who has no authority over classified intel.

As for the materials in question, Zwonitzer claims to have given everything to the Justice Department and responded via his attorneys that if the committee wants them, they should discuss it with them.

On Thursday, June 27, the committee decided to hold him in contempt.
