(LibertySons.org) – House Republicans want Attorney General Merrick Garland to hand over the audio tapes of President Joe Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur. The AG has refused to do so. Former President Donald Trump is now supporting one congresswoman’s effort to hold him in contempt.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) introduced a resolution to hold Garland in inherent contempt of the House of Representatives for disobeying a subpoena. That’s a process where the House sergeant-at-arms takes someone into custody and tries them on the House floor.
The last time it was done was in 1916. The congresswoman’s measure didn’t call for Garland to be taken into custody but did ask Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) to fine the AG $10,000 per day until he complied with the subpoena.
Luna issued a statement arguing the only way to force the AG to comply with the subpoena is by holding him in contempt. She explained that the Hur tapes are “an issue of national security” and claimed they prove the president “is impaired.” The Florida congresswoman also alleged there is a criminal conspiracy happening to prevent Congress from doing its job “as a co-equal branch of government.”
On July 10, Trump posted a status on Truth Social agreeing with Luna’s resolution. He said that many members of Congress think the AG “should be held in INHERENT CONTEMPT” for refusing to comply with the subpoena.
The presumptive GOP nominee called on House Republicans to also issue a subpoena for special counsel Jack Smith over his “illegal” investigations into him. He also demanded Congress pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require people to show proof of citizenship to vote.
Trump said, “Republicans MUST GET TOUGH about stopping weaponization and cheating!”
On July 11, the House rejected Luna’s resolution. After the measure failed to pass, Luna said that she refiled the measure and would call on the House to vote on it again in the coming weeks. She declared that Garland had to be held accountable because nobody “is above the law.”
