(LibertySons.org) – In February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, starting a war that has lasted for the past two years. The United States and several other nations around the world have supported the sovereign nation’s fight against its invaders, sending aid to help the Ukrainian military defend their country. Heavy sanctions were also made against Russia to deter its advance. Russian President Vladimir Putin recently made a statement regarding the help.
On February 29, the New York Post reported that Putin threatened Western nations with action if they didn’t stop assisting Ukraine in the war. During his annual address, the Russian leader said his military can “hit targets” on Western territories. He asked if those countries, which include the United States, understand that focusing on Ukraine “threatens a conflict” using “nuclear weapons and the destruction of civilization.” Putin said his “strategic nuclear forces” are ready.
The NY Post stated that the Russian leader was visibly angry during his speech as he recalled his nation’s response to Adolf Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte’s attempt to invade. He warned that Russia’s response in those instances would pale in comparison to a response today, stating it would be “far more tragic.”
Putin’s threat comes on the heels of a suggestion from French President Emmanuel Macron, who said “nothing can be ruled out” when it comes to supporting Ukraine — even troops on the ground. Still, he made it clear there was “no consensus” to do so. According to the BBC, President Joe Biden (D) believes the best way for Ukraine to win is for Western countries to continue providing military aid so the troops have what they need “to defend themselves.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni all said they were against putting boots on the ground.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed it wouldn’t be in NATO’s best interests to involve themselves in that way.
