(LibertySons.org) – Constantine II, the former king of Greece, died in January 2023. Prince William was scheduled to give a reading at his memorial service. However, the royal had to pull out at the last minute.
On February 27, Queen Camilla led members of the British royal family at a service for Constantine. The memorial was held at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Prince William was going to speak at the event Kensington Palace announced he had to pull out suddenly. They attributed his absence to a “personal matter” but didn’t elaborate.
The Prince of Wales called Constantine’s family and let them know he wasn’t going to be able to attend the memorial. King Charles III was also not at the service because of his ongoing cancer treatments. The king was staying at Windsor Castle but didn’t meet with any of the foreign royals who traveled there for the service. He departed the castle on Tuesday morning.
Princess Catherine is currently away until after Easter. She has returned to royal duties after recovering from abdominal surgery earlier this year. Kensington Palace made it clear the personal issue had nothing to do with her health, saying her recovery is going well.
King Charles and Constantine had a close relationship. They were second cousins, and the former king was also one of the late Duke of Edinburgh’s sailing partners. Constantine’s oldest son, Crown Prince Pavlos, stepped in and gave the reading at the church instead of Prince William.
Constantine II is known as the last king of Greece. He ruled the country from 1964 to 1974, but his reign was actually only three years. In 1967, he was forced to leave the country and live in exile after a military coup. The king went to London and lived there for decades. In 2013, he was able to return to Greece to live.
The former monarch is buried in Greece next to his parents at Tatoi Palace.
