(LibertySons.org) – There’s no doubt that an immigration crisis is ravaging cities across America. Millions of migrants have entered the US since President Joe Biden took office and depleted community resources. Democratic lawmakers in one state want to pass a law that could give migrants a guaranteed basic income.
On March 8, lawmakers introduced HF 2666 to the Minnesota House. The legislation would provide a small basic income to eligible recipients.
To be an eligible recipient, a resident’s income must be at or below 300% of the federal poverty line. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, that means a family of four, making at or below $93,600 would be eligible for payments of at least $500 per month for 18 to 24 months. The legislation was approved by the Minnesota House Children and Families Finance and Policy Committee on March 12. Lawmakers would pay for the bill with $100 million that would come from the state’s general fund in fiscal year 2025.
The bill’s author, state Rep. Athena Hollins (D), spoke at the committee hearing and suggested lawmakers extend the bill “to individuals who may not have documentation.” The bill currently states grantees are allowed to set requirements for recipients but aren’t allowed to “require any other income, proof of residency or citizenship, or identifying documentation of any recipient.”
State Rep. Carlie Kotyza-Witthuhn (D) argued that Minnesota should support illegal immigrants, claiming they pay $5.8 billion in taxes. State Rep. Walter Hudson (R) slammed the bill, saying it “explicitly” provides money to illegals or people who have claimed they are someone they aren’t.
Once a person qualifies, they don’t have to recertify for it. State Rep. Ben Davis (R) told WPDE that the “program absolutely will be abused.” He predicted the money would help people pay for drugs and alcohol. He argued the “magic money tree of government money” is going to come straight from “hardworking taxpayer[s].”
