(LibertySons.org) – Born in 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa, Jim Inhofe grew up in Oklahoma, graduated from the University of Tulsa, and served in the Oklahoma legislature simultaneously. The conservative went on to become the mayor of Tulsa in 1978 and a US representative six years later. Inhofe was elected to the US Senate in 1994 and stayed there until 2023, ending his extensive political career.
On July 9, the former senator’s family confirmed that the 89-year-old died after having a stroke around the Fourth of July. Beyond Inhofe’s more than six decades in politics, the former legislator was known for pushing back on climate change and mainstream science in general. He didn’t believe that human activity contributed to the climate shift phenomenon, referring to it as the “greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.”
Inhofe once brought a snowball onto the Senate floor to prove that global warming didn’t exist. During the Trump administration, the former senator reportedly helped to roll back environmental policies set during the Obama administration. In 2012, Inhofe wrote a book entitled “The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future.”
Inhofe served in the Army for one year and loved aviation. Although his stint serving the country in the military was very brief, the former senator was a strong supporter of funding and modernizing the armed forces. He opposed cutbacks and “pushed for the United States” to give Ukraine more military assistance. Inhofe decided to retire from politics to spend more time with his wife, Kay.
Several people spoke out following Inhofe’s death to relay their condolences. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said Inhofe was a “mountain of a man” whose work for “American energy dominance unlocked new prosperity” in the US. McConnell also commended the former senator’s work on strengthening the military. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) called Inhofe a “mentor” and said he would be missed.
