(LibertySons.org) – A former Yakima, Washington, police officer fled the state on Monday, April 22, after allegedly murdering two people. Law enforcement officers in Washington and Oregon frantically searched for the ex-cop who’d also kidnapped his 1-year-old son. The search came to an abrupt end.
West Richland Police Department received a call just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday about a shooting outside of William Wiley Elementary School. When they arrived, they found Amber Rodriguez, who police say had been shot eight times by her ex-husband Elias Huizar. She was a teacher at the school.
According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, the victim’s 9-year-old witnessed the shooting. Rodriguez had recently filed to change custody for the children they shared, a 5-year-old and the child who witnessed the murder.
Police began searching for the suspect, who’d served as a cop from 2013 to 2021. They went to his home and found the body of his 17-year-old girlfriend, relatives identified as Angelica Santos. Washington State Patrol issued an Amber Alert for 1-year-old Roman Huizar. The baby belonged to Santos and Huizar. Reports indicated the suspect met her when she was 11 years old while he was working as a school resource officer.
The shootings happened the same day Huizar was supposed to appear in court on two child rape charges, one of which was related to the assault of Santos. He was arrested on February 3 after Santos reported him to law enforcement for allegedly raping her 16-year-old friend while she was unconscious. Police charged him with the rape of both Santos and her friend.
At approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday, authorities on Interstate 5 near Eugene, Oregon, spotted the suspect. Huizar fled when officers tried to pull him over. The chase ended when Huizar hit another vehicle, disabling his car. When Oregon State troopers attempted to make contact with the suspect, he shot himself.
Oregon State Police Capt. Kyle Kennedy told the media that officials took the baby into state care.
