Biden to Focus on Supreme Court Reform in Final Six Months

(LibertySons.org) – President Joe Biden gave an Oval Office address on July 24. He explained to the country what led to his decision to withdraw from his reelection campaign and laid out his plans for the remainder of his term. One item on the agenda was Supreme Court reform.

While laying out his priorities, the president said he was going to “call for Supreme Court reform because [it] is critical to [America’s] democracy.” Biden’s announcement during his speech came about a week after The Washington Post (WaPo) reported he was set to announce support for major Supreme Court reforms.

Biden didn’t expand on his remarks about the court in his speech, but reports indicated what he was considering throwing his support behind. Among the proposals sources believe he will support are term limits for justices and an ethics code that is actually enforceable.

SCOTUS reform has become one of the Democratic Party’s rallying cries in recent years. The Left is angry that former President Donald Trump was able to appoint three justices to the court and solidify the conservative majority, possibly for decades.

The calls for reform became louder when the court reversed the 50-year-old Roe v. Wade abortion precedent. Biden has faced criticism by the far left for not forcefully supporting changes to the court in the past. During a call with the Congressional Caucus earlier this month, the president said he would need their “help” regarding the court. According to a transcript provided to WaPo, Biden said he had been “working with constitutional scholars for the last three months” but didn’t want to “prematurely announce” anything.

Congress would have to approve an ethics code and term limits. Republicans currently control the House, and the Democrats have a slim majority in the Senate. There’s almost no chance GOP lawmakers would support any changes the Democratic Party wants to implement.
