(LibertySons.org) – Immigration has been an ongoing issue that both Republicans and Democrats agree needs reform. A recent Gallup poll showed that 55% of Americans would like to see a decrease in immigration numbers. Many members of the GOP point to the Biden administration as a key problem in resolving the issue, saying the US borders are open.
On July 17 at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, former Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Tom Homan said President Joe Biden’s open border policy is “national suicide.” The former acting director said he has worked under more than a handful of presidents, and every one of them “said they were going to secure the border.” Homan said the only one who accomplished that task was former President Donald Trump. He said leaving the border open is a “choice” Biden is making.
Expounding on Trump’s approach to the border, Homan said the country’s illegal immigration during his presidency was cut “by 90%, the lowest level in 45 years.” He also said there were more deportations under the former president, including “gang members and criminals.” The former acting director pointed out that during the Trump administration, there were only 13 people on the Terrorist Watch List arrested, compared to 381 so far under the Biden administration. Homan called Trump a “warrior” who will “make America safe again” by ending the current administration’s “open border madness.”
According to Statista, there were an estimated 10.99 million undocumented immigrants in the United States in 2022 — 1.9 million of them were apprehended in the US during that year. Over the 2023 fiscal year, Customs and Border Patrol reported over 2.4 million encounters at the southern border. So far in the current fiscal year, that number stands at just over 1.8 million encounters, with three more months to go until the end of the 12-month period.
Immigration continues to be a key issue for voters going into the November election.
