(LibertySons.org) – On July 13, there was an attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The GOP presidential nominee sustained an injury during the incident, one bystander was killed, and two others were critically hurt. Many called the horrific event a failure by the Secret Service, as the alleged shooter was able to climb onto a nearby rooftop with a rifle. Still, the head of the group refused to step down.
Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle sat for an interview after the shooting, where she admitted the assassination attempt was “unacceptable” and “the buck stops with [her.]” However, Cheatle also said she would not resign her position.
Meanwhile, Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) said she “introduced legislation to hold” Cheatle accountable, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) called on the director to testify before Congress, and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said there would be a full congressional investigation into the matter.
Former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker called the events at the rally a complete “security breakdown from start to finish.” He noted that the security plan, as well as the reactions by the Secret Service after shots were fired, were both subpar. He pondered what would’ve happened if a trained sniper climbed onto that roof instead of an amateur who was reportedly a bad shot.
Swecker criticized the agents for allowing Trump to retrieve his shoes, expose his head, and throw his fist in the air, all actions that endangered the former president’s life in that situation. He mentioned their height and gender as factors in the alleged fumble, noting he believed at least some of them were DEI picks.
The investigation into the assassination attempt is still ongoing. So far, no motive for the shooting has been established. It’s unclear what kinds of consequences, if any, Cheatle or other members of the Secret Service will face in the wake of the attack.
