(LibertySons.org) – Many Republicans believe that the legal prosecutions of former President Donald Trump are nothing more than a coordinated witch hunt to keep him out of the White House. At the center of the theories is that the Biden administration has weaponized the Department of Justice (DOJ) against the former POTUS. In order to find out about any possible connection between them and the prosecutors in the cases against Trump, the House Judiciary Committee wants to hear more from US Attorney General Merrick Garland — but he’s being less than forthcoming with his testimony, even in the face of contempt charges.
In May, the House Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight Committee advanced contempt charges against Garland for his failure to comply with subpoenas and for failure to provide evidence as requested. In the case of the Oversight Committee, they issued a subpoena in February requesting audio file recordings of President Joe Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hurn, who was investigating his handling of classified documents.
The Judiciary Committee had requested all communications between the DOJ and district attorneys Fani Willis of Fulton County, Georgia, and Alvin Bragg of New York County, as well as Attorney General of New York State Letitia James. This was done to determine whether the DOJ was assisting state prosecutors in their respective cases against Trump.
At a hearing on Tuesday, June 4, Garland called the ideas “conspiracy theories” and said, “We do not control those offices. They make their own decisions.” Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) pointed out that releasing all communications between the parties would clear up Garland’s so-called conspiracy theories.
Garland also said that contempt is a serious charge but added, “I will not be intimidated. And the Justice Department will not be intimidated.” He claims that providing the requested communications would put other investigations at risk, and he has no intentions of complying with the requests.
