NATO Chief Urged to Resign After Urging Ukraine to Strike Russia

(LibertySons.org) – In February of 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his military forces over the border of neighboring Ukraine in what many consider his attempt to reclaim the former glory of the Soviet Union. When the war started, experts expected the drastic differences in manpower and equipment would lead to a swift Russian victory. However, backed by supplies and training from NATO and other Western countries — and the survival spirit of its citizens — the invaded nation has fought back valiantly, but is barely holding its own. Now one NATO leader is under fire for suggesting Ukraine take more drastic measures.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was created in 1949 as an alliance of Western nations to protect themselves from the aggressive Soviet Union. Member countries pool resources to provide for the defense of all. An attack on one member was considered an attack on all and would trigger a collective response. As the world entered the Cold War in the 1960s, the group became an advocate for peace and called for the stabilization of the region.

That peaceful mission has been tested since the start of the Russo-Ukraine conflict. NATO countries, especially the US, UK, and Germany, have provided weapons systems and other equipment specifically earmarked for Ukraine’s defensive efforts. At least one NATO leader thinks this is not enough.

On May 25, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said he is in favor of letting Ukraine use the weapons supplied by the West to launch offensive attacks inside mainland Russia, saying, “To deny Ukraine the possibility of using these weapons against legitimate military targets on Russian territory makes it very hard for them to defend themselves.”

These strong words have led to heavy criticisms of Stoltenberg, with some calling for him to resign. Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said, “Stoltenberg either retracts or apologizes or resigns.”
