(LibertySons.org) – Former President Donald Trump is attempting to balance his campaign to retake the White House with the time needed to defend himself from his many legal issues. After a recent day in court in New York, he spoke about the trial but quickly turned his attention to attacking his political opponent, President Joe Biden. One former lawyer took exception to some of his remarks.
On April 25, CNN aired a clip of Trump’s meeting with reporters outside the Manhattan courtroom where his hush money trial is taking place. After talking about the day’s testimony, he spoke about Biden’s inability to control the pro-Palestine protests at college campuses and other locations. He specifically called out the current POTUS for comparing the current unrest to the violence that erupted at a White Nationalist convention in Charlottesville seven years ago.
Trump called the incident in Charlottesville in August 2017, when white nationalists and counterprotesters turned violent, a “little peanut” and “nothing compared [to current protests]” and that “the hate wasn’t the kind of hate that you have here, this is tremendous hate.” One person died as a direct result of the unrest in Charlottesville when a neo-Nazi ran over a woman with his car.
After showing Trump’s remarks, former White House lawyer and CNN commentator Jim Schultz said mentioning Charlottesville “has to make his campaign cringe at this point.” Shultz went on to say it was a bad time for Trump when it happened, and mentioning it again brought back memories of the event for victims, their families, and the nation, calling the comments “a big mistake…politically to raise that [issue].”
Schultz went on to say that the rest of Trump’s remarks were typically campaign rhetoric. For example, Trump mentioned Biden’s inability to lead and that he was sending “an absolutely horrible message.” Trump also said that Biden “can’t speak, he can’t put two sentences together.”
