(LibertySons.org) – Being a member of the United States Secret Service (USSS) can be a stressful job. It only makes sense as agents put their lives on the line every day to protect public servants like senators, Supreme Court Justices, and executive branch officials like the president. One of Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service agents was recently hospitalized after exhibiting some odd behavior.
Around 9 a.m. on Monday, April 22, an unnamed secret service special agent on Harris’s detail began acting strangely while working on the VP’s departure from Joint Base Andrews. Harris was not on-site at the time. Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi said the agent “began displaying behavior their colleagues found distressing.”
Sources told CBS News that the agent started speaking incoherently and even pushing the special agent in charge. The agent in question was detained and relieved of duty while medical services were called to the scene. They are being evaluated for medical issues, and sources say substance use is not a consideration at this time.
Another consideration is the agent’s security clearance. After the medical evaluation, the agent’s fitness for duty will be determined, and their security clearance may be revoked if they are deemed a risk.
While the agent’s actions could have led to disciplinary action, at this time, the incident is being treated as a medical issue pending further investigation.
There are approximately 6,500 people employed by the Secret Service, including 3,200 special agents. There are another 1,300 in the Uniformed Division and more than 2,000 technical, professional, and administrative workers. In his statement, Guglielmi added that the “Secret Service takes the safety and health of our employees very seriously.”
Harris was still at her home in the Naval Observatory when the incident happened, and it did not impact her departure for a trip to Wisconsin later that day.
