(LibertySons.org) – In 2022, a federal court ruled against former President Donald Trump’s Title 42 policy that allowed the federal government to quickly deport migrants. The Supreme Court also allowed President Joe Biden’s administration to end the Migrant Protection Protocols, known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy. Some Democrats are now asking the commander-in-chief to bring the policies back.
On April 20, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) introduced a border security plan that failed to receive the two-thirds majority needed to pass the House. Five House Democrats issued a joint statement after the vote and called on Biden to reinstate the Remain in Mexico and Title 42 policies.
The New York Post reported Reps. Mary Peltola (AK), Jared Golden (ME), Don Davis (NC), Vicente Gonzalez (TX), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA) called on the president to use his executive powers to take action. The lawmakers said they agreed with a statement by the National Border Patrol Council that Congress and Biden need to take action to “bring order to the Southern border.”
National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd slammed the House for passing the $95 billion foreign policy package while failing to act to give Border Patrol the power it needs to protect America. He said, “There’s nothing more backwards.”
In addition to asking the president to act, they called on their colleagues in the House and Senate to pass a bill that gives Title 42 authority back to Border Patrol, allowing them to deport migrants who enter illegally.
Title 42 was implemented in 2020 during the national health crisis. It was a health policy that gave Border Patrol the power to expel migrants to control the spread of the virus. It stayed in place until May 2023 but ended when the health emergency was over.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers negotiated a border bill that contained some of the strictest policies in decades. However, after weeks of partisan bickering, lawmakers failed to pass the legislation, and the Southern border remains in chaos.
