(LibertySons.org) – Two senior Democrat politicians have called on Israel’s prime minister to resign. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) want Benjamin Netanyahu to quit over his leadership of the Jewish state’s war against the Hamas terror group. Both insist they support Israel’s right to defend itself –- but they want to force a change of leadership in the middle of a war.
Israel’s War Isn’t Over
The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) has now been fighting Hamas in the Gaza Strip for more than six months. In the aftermath of last year’s October 7 atrocity, which left more than 1,200 Israelis dead and more than 250 taken hostage, troops moved into the Hamas-controlled territory to wipe out the Iran-backed group’s terrorist infrastructure.
Now, Hamas has been forced out of most of Gaza’s territory, and its remaining gunmen are concentrated in the southern city of Rafah. President Biden and other liberal leaders have been urging Netanyahu to either hold back from an assault on Rafah or prioritize the welfare of Palestinian civilians. However, Israelis won’t tolerate the Hamas units in Rafah –- which make up around 20% of the group’s original strength –- being left intact, and the terrorists refuse to surrender despite the toll the war has taken on civilians.
Pelosi, Schumer Criticize Leadership
In March, Schumer, who is Jewish and strongly pro-Israel, said the Jewish state should hold elections after the war ends. He openly criticized Netanyahu, accusing the prime minister of working with “right-wing extremists” and warning that Israel’s reputation could be damaged.
On April 23, Pelosi joined the attack. In an interview with Irish state broadcaster RTE, she blasted the fact that, according to Hamas, around 34,000 Palestinians died during Israel’s invasion of Gaza (although this number is disputed and doesn’t separate civilian and terrorist casualties). She said the war was “terrible” and stated that Netanyahu should follow the example of IDF intelligence chief Maj Gen Aharon Haliva, who resigned on April 22.
Pelosi told RTE that Netanyahu has been an obstacle to peace for years, saying she doesn’t know “whether he’s afraid of peace, incapable of peace or just doesn’t want peace.” She also praised the sincerity of pro-Palestinian student protesters but said some of the far-left opposition to Israel “has a Russian tinge to it.”
New York’s Columbia University has been forced to move all classes online after student activists threatened Jewish students, and opposition to Israel is losing the Democrats’ support among young radicals. We can expect to see more liberal politicians criticizing Netanyahu’s government in an attempt to minimize the damage.
