(LibertySons.org) – Germany has provided Ukraine with the third-most military, financial, and humanitarian assistance behind EU Institutions and the United States. Recently, German economy minister Robert Habeck traveled to the sovereign nation to offer even more support. But not everyone is on board with Germany’s efforts, as two of the country’s citizens were allegedly doing Russia’s bidding.
On April 18, German prosecutors announced that two men were arrested in Bayreuth, just outside of Bavaria, under suspicion that they “worked for a foreign intelligence service” — spying. The suspects, identified as Dieter S. and Alexander J., were allegedly in contact with an intermediary who was connected to the Russian secret service.
Authorities believe the men were working with Russia to plan “explosive and arson attacks” against German military and industrial sites — but that’s not all. The suspects were also reportedly planning to target US military facilities as well.
Der Spiegel reported the facilities included an army base in Bavaria where soldiers from Ukraine were learning how to use US Abrams tanks. Apparently, one of the men — Dieter — was a member of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) in eastern Ukraine from 2014 to 2016. The region was illegally annexed by Russia in 2022. He faces an additional crime of belonging to a “foreign terrorist” group.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser confirmed that authorities prevented “possible explosive attacks.” German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann told a German news agency that the arrests were “another significant” step in dismantling Russia’s sabotage and spy networks. Another blow to the network happened in 2023 when authorities made several arrests in Poland.
Habeck will be meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss how Germany further help Ukraine in its “fight for freedom.” In the United States, Congress is currently working on a bill to send more funding to the region as well. It’s unclear if House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will have success getting it passed.
