(LibertySons.org) – Scam calls are nothing new in America. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission recently showed that consumers lost over $10 billion to fraud in 2023 — a 14% increase year-over-year. Scammers use different tactics to trick unsuspecting victims out of their hard-earned dollars, sometimes using threats to get what they want. One such incident recently turned deadly when the victim allegedly shot an Uber driver just doing her job.
On March 25, 81-year-old William Brock reportedly received a phone call from an individual posing as an officer who demanded money in exchange for his nephew’s release from jail. The voice on the other end of the line told Brock if he didn’t comply and pay $12,000, the caller would kill him and his loved one.
Soon afterward, 61-year-old Loletha Hall, an Uber driver, arrived at the man’s home in South Charleston, stating she was there to pick up a package. She also had apparently received a phone call from the same mysterious scammer. When she exited the vehicle, Brock reportedly pulled a gun on her and demanded to know who was scamming him. When she tried to get away, he allegedly shot her three times.
During the interaction, Brock was also reportedly injured, so he called 911. When emergency services arrived, they transported Hall to the hospital, but she didn’t survive her wounds. The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. He pleaded not guilty to the charge but faces 15 years to life in prison for the alleged crime. Bail was set at $200,000.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office released a statement about the incident, telling the public that “no law enforcement agency or court” would ever make such a phone call demanding “cash for bail.” The statement urged residents to “use extreme caution” if contacted in such a manner. Uber also released a statement sending its condolences to “Loletha’s loved ones,” adding that the suspect that brought Hall to Brock’s home was now banned.
