(LibertySons.org) – On April 2, the World Central Kitchen (WCK) announced that members of its team were leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse in Gaza when an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) strike killed seven workers. Those people from Australia, the UK, the US, Canada, and Palestine were delivering much-needed humanitarian aid. President Joe Biden reacted strongly to the devastating news.
On April 2, the US leader said he was both “outraged and heartbroken” by the deaths, referring to the WCK members as “brave and selfless.” He called for a full and transparent investigation into the matter and slammed Israel for not doing enough to “protect aid workers.”
Biden said the people in Gaza desperately need the help, and the incident should’ve never happened. The president encouraged Israel to “deconflict” around humanitarian efforts to lessen civilian casualties. Biden also contacted the founder of the WCK directly to convey his condolences about the tragedy.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also responded to the incident stating it was an “unintended strike” by the IDF on “innocent people in the Gaza Strip.” The PM promised to do whatever he could to ensure something like that didn’t happen again and said his officials were investigating the matter.
However, Netanyahu also said, “This happens in war.” Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, Israel’s military chief, said early results from the preliminary investigation showed the tragedy was a case of mistaken identity. The WCK said its vehicles were clearly marked.
World Central Kitchen CEO Erin Gore called the incident “unforgivable.” She said it wasn’t just an attack on her organization but on all groups trying to deliver aid to starving people.
The WCK paused all operations in the Gaza Strip and its ships carrying about 240 tons of much-needed aid left the region. Meanwhile, famine is a real danger in Gaza, with the Palestinian people on the brink of starvation.
