(LibertySons.org) – Former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) became the first speaker in American history to be ousted last year. His successor, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) is now facing similar threats for the same reason that got McCarthy ousted: the speaker negotiated with Democrats.
On Friday, March 22, a bipartisan majority in the House passed a $1.2 trillion spending package that included the final six appropriations bills to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year. Lawmakers voted 286-134 to fund the Departments of Defense, Labor, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, State, and other parts of the federal government. The agencies would have shut down the following day if lawmakers didn’t pass a bill. The Senate subsequently passed the bill as well and President Joe Biden signed it into law early Saturday morning.
Although both Speaker Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) praised the bill, not everyone was happy about it.
During remarks on the House floor, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), the policy leader of the House Freedom Caucus, slammed leadership for failing to get stricter restrictions on immigration. He brought up Laken Riley, the 22-year-old Augusta University student who was murdered on the University of Georgia campus. The suspect in the killing is an illegal immigrant.
Roy stated that his colleagues passed a bill in Riley’s name but then funded “the very policies that [led] to her death.” He went on to say that by voting for the “abomination of a bill,” they voted to fund open borders.
The Freedom Caucus held a press conference before the bill was voted on and called it “chock full of crap.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced a motion to vacate the speaker during the bill vote but later said she wasn’t going to push for a vote. No Republicans supported the effort anyway.
Lawmakers now have just over six months to work together to pass a budget for fiscal year 2025.
