(LibertySons.org) – Congress has narrowly avoided a government shutdown once again. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) is taking heat for it. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is now defending herself after being accused of trying to cause chaos.
On March 22, Johnson pushed a $1.2 trillion spending package to keep the government open. Shortly after its passage, Greene announced she “filed a motion to vacate” the House speaker, saying he betrayed Republicans and broke their rules. The New York Times reported the Georgia congresswoman said she wasn’t going to push forward with removing Johnson right away but called her motion “more of a warning than a pink slip” and said they needed a new speaker.
Greene filed the motion to vacate Johnson as the House was still voting on the spending package.
On March 24, Greene appeared on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.” Host Maria Bartiromo asked her whether the timing of the motion was poor, given the recent wave of resignations in the House GOP caucus.
Greene responded, denying that resignations and paralysis in the House were related to the far-right members of the caucus. She blamed the members who are leaving for the problems, saying they put the party at risk of being in the minority. She credited herself with “forcing change,” saying she was “not bringing chaos.”
No other Republicans signed on to support her motion to vacate Johnson. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), the lawmaker responsible for pushing former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) out for passing a similar bill, said he probably wouldn’t support the measure to oust Johnson. Other Conservatives attacked Greene for her measure.
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) called the congresswoman’s motion “idiotic” and said it didn’t advance the party’s agenda. He claimed the American people stand with the GOP on the issues but don’t support “the idiocy and the chaos.”
