(LibertySons.org) – Vice President Kamala Harris just completed her “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour across several US states, and her final stop was at a Planned Parenthood facility in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota. She claimed in her closing speech that restrictions to abortion access have led to the country suffering a “serious health crisis,” and countless women are “silently suffering” as a result.
Harris made her bold claims on March 14, when she made history as the first vice president ever to make an official visit to a facility that offers abortions. She began her speech by referencing the US Supreme Court’s decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which effectively turned over Roe v. Wade. The ruling determined that the right to abortions should be determined on the state level, ripping away federal protections and opening the doors for several leaders to impose restrictions and full bans.
Planned Parenthood shares that 14 states have lost all access since the fateful Supreme Court decision. Another half dozen have placed severe restrictions on the procedure. These statistics, according to Harris, are unacceptable. She claims the court wrongfully stripped women of a “constitutional right” the country had recognized for decades.
The vice president blames “extremists” for the changes, stressing the collateral damage she insists women face when clinics are forced to close their doors. The vice president adds that Planned Parenthood clinics provide breast cancer screenings, treatment for uterine fibroids, and access to contraceptive care (in addition to abortions), so they’re vital to women’s overall health.
Harris closes her speech by calling the move to prevent abortions “outrageous” and “immoral,” slamming elected leaders for feeling they know best about their constituents’ personal healthcare needs. Meanwhile, the country remains sharply divided on whether the procedure should remain legal. Pew Research found that religion plays a strong influence on those views. Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, and Evangelical Protestants, particularly those who attend church regularly, are the most apt to oppose allowing abortion access.
