(LibertySons.org) – The Department of Justice charged Peter Navarro with two counts of contempt of Congress for ignoring a congressional subpoena from the January 6 committee. The former adviser to ex-President Donald Trump was found guilty last year. He’s now been ordered to report to jail.
US District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Navarro to four months in prison. He tried to remain free while appealing his conviction but the judge rejected his bid last month, saying he failed to demonstrate why his sentence should be postponed. Navarro’s legal team argued the former president claimed executive privilege over the testimony.
However, previous courts ruled that was not the case, and the current executive, President Joe Biden, waived executive privilege over the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Mehta stated that Navarro’s appeal didn’t raise a “substantial question of law.”
On March 10, Navarro’s attorneys revealed the judge ordered him to report to the Bureau of Prisons, FCI Miami, on March 19 at 2 p.m. EDT. His attorney reiterated the defendant’s “request for an administrative stay” and if the judge denies the request, the lawyer requested one again so the Supreme Court could review the denial.
Steve Bannon, another of Trump’s ex-advisers, was also convicted of contempt of Congress. Unlike Navarro, the judge overseeing his case has allowed him to remain free while he appeals the case. That, however, is not typical of the courts.
In another case, Navarro is fighting the Department of Justice in civil court over hundreds of documents he was required to hand over to the National Archives when he left office but refused to do so. Some of the documents are allegedly related to the 2020 election.
Navarro was among the members of the Trump administration who believed the election was stolen. The congressional subpoenas he ignored related to his actions leading up to the attack on the Capitol.
