(LibertySons.org) – Former President Donald Trump reportedly has a lengthy list of potential running mates, and former primary rivals Tim Scott, Ron DeSantis, and Vivek Ramaswamy are all among the options he’s considering. He also hasn’t ruled out a few other possibilities, one of whom once ran in the presidential primaries as a Democrat.
POLITICO reports that Trump has at least six people in mind, but he insists all of them are “solid” individuals. In addition to Scott, DeSantis, and Ramaswamy, the shortlist includes Florida Rep. Byron Donalds and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, both Republicans, along with former Hawaiian Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who represented her district as a Democrat. She also ran in the 2020 presidential primaries as a progressive but officially broke from the party for being too “woke” in 2022.
The New York Post states that Trump is looking for a vice presidential candidate who will, above all, be a great leader “if something should happen.” He doesn’t believe his decision will have any impact on his polls, however. He claims voters are most concerned with their choice for president, insisting that the decision for second in command won’t be important to the overall race.
FiveThirtyEight currently lists Trump as the clear frontrunner ahead of challenger Nikki Haley. Polls show the former president has about 77.8% of Republicans support, compared to the roughly 16.7% of conservatives who support the GOP challenger. He needs at least 1,215 delegates to win the primary nomination, according to The New York Times. So far, Trump holds 62 of the delegates, but Haley is clinging on to the race with 17. There are still numerous votes ahead, but considering the vast majority of Republicans who remain in support of the MAGA leader, his decision to start looking for a general election running mate is probably a smart one.
Whoever Trump chooses, it probably won’t be Haley. He reportedly ruled her out as a contender a few months ago.
