(LibertySons.org) – Timing is everything, and in February 2007, rookie Matt Ulrich was in the right place at the right time on the right team with the right quarterback. The Colts, led by Peyton Manning, beat the Chicago Bears to win Super Bowl XLI in Miami. Sadly, on November 8, 2023, Ulrich died at the young age of 41.
Ulrich played college ball for the Northwestern University Wildcats, becoming team caption in 2004. He signed as an offensive lineman with the Colts in 2005 and played two seasons, a total of 10 games. Yet the 2006 season was magical for the Colts.
After retiring from football, Ulrich founded DexaFit, a company offering fitness analysis and testing to optimize performance. He also served as director of Profitable Ideas Exchange, leading peer-to-peer interactions.
Colts owner Jim Irsay wrote a touching tribute on X, former Twitter, expressing his heartbreak at learning of Ulrich’s passing and extending his prayers for the former Super Bowl champ’s family. Former teammates, friends, and fans also left tributes on social media.
Ulrich’s wife, Alison, left one of the most touching posts, as the New York Post reported. She announced her husband’s death and expressed how much she missed him. She also talked about how difficult it would be to move forward. She asked friends and supporters to pray for their four sons because they’d “lost their greatest fan, coach, and friend.” Finally, she expressed her gratitude to everyone who had reached out and offered help and surrounded her family in love.
Family friends set up a GiveSendGo account to benefit Ulrich’s family. The cover page on the site explained that concerned friends had started the donation site as a way for the community to support the family as they navigate the difficult and uncertain path forward. As of the morning of November 10, the site had collected nearly $54,000.
The family has not disclosed Ulrich’s cause of death. He leaves behind his wife, Alison, and four sons, Gunther, Dalton, Bowden, and Thoreau.
