(LibertySons.org) – Over 1,900 people have died so far in the most recent deadly clash between Israel and Gaza Strip Palestinians, and that number is sure to keep rising as long as officials struggle to foster peace throughout the region. President Joe Biden didn’t let that minor detail stop him from hosting a barbecue at the White House for resident staff and family members. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MI) is among the conservatives who’ve expressed their outrage over the event.
Israel officially declared war against Hamas, Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip, after the group attacked numerous civilian locations, killing an estimated 1,000 Israeli citizens and wounding thousands more. According to Fox News, at least 11 of the people the militant group murdered have been confirmed as Americans. Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting over Gaza for decades, although Hamas has claimed steady control of the roughly 23-mile stretch of Mediterranean coastal land since 2007.
Hamas took 130 people hostage during its deadly weekend assault, but officials aren’t yet sure if any of those people are also US citizens. The Associated Press reports that the Islamic militant group has threatened to kill a hostage every time Israel goes after another person in Gaza “without prior warning.”
Hawley shared his thoughts regarding Biden’s response on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. He said the president should be getting details on American involvement and working on solutions to help get the hostages in Gaza home, not hosting barbecues. Other Republicans, including Sen. Tommy Tuberville (AL) and Rep. Darrell Issa (CA) echoed Hawley’s criticism.
The White House defended its decision to follow through with the party, stating that the event was in honor of people who work there, and it had given the staff members that day off. A US Embassy spokesperson also offered the administration’s condolences to everyone who has suffered as a result of the attacks.
