(LibertySons.org) – The Russian war on Ukraine is barreling toward its third anniversary. Negotiations between the two nations are at a standstill. Dozens are now dead after missile strikes.
On July 8, Russia carried out a large-scale missile attack across Ukraine. At least 42 people died in the attacks, including children. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said 64 people had to be hospitalized in Kyiv, in addition to six in Dnipro and 28 in Kryvyi Rih.
The Russian military launched dozens of missiles across the country, including at the Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv. The hospital treats kids with serious illnesses, like kidney disease and cancer. There were approximately 670 patients and 1,000 staff members at the hospital at the time of the attack.
Danielle Bell, the head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, told the press that an analysis of video footage of the attack indicated there was “a high likelihood that the children’s hospital suffered a direct hit” and didn’t just receive damage after a missile interception. She explained that hospital staff moved the patients to a bunker the day before when they heard the air raid sirens. Had it not been for their quick actions, “the casualties would have been much higher.”
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the attacks included Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missiles. The weapons are some of the most advanced that the country has and are harder for defense systems to detect. Russia has used the weapons before but has a limited supply so doesn’t use them often.
Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said two people were killed at the hospital, including a 30-year-old doctor. Sixteen others suffered injuries, including seven children. Rescue workers were photographed digging through the rubble at the site to try to rescue people. The mayor said rescuers heard people from under the rubble, so the number of casualties could increase.
