(LibertySons.org) – The White House Correspondents Dinner is an annual event slated this year for April 30. In light of a recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Washington, DC, this year’s gala has some requirements. According to the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), anyone attending must have a same-day negative COVID test.

The Hill reported that WHCA President Steven Portnoy said the testing protocols would be vital to keeping the event safe. Portnoy noted almost all members already have vaccinations, but the administration will still rely on testing to ensure all guests are healthy. The WHCA president also cited that concerns over the event being a super-spreader gathering will not delay the gala.
Some questions remain moving forward due to the April 2 Gridiron Club Dinner, which NBC News reported that 72 DC elites tested positive for COVID-19. Among those who attended and later became infected were Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Attorney General Merrick Garland, New York Mayor Eric Adams (D), and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
The White House Correspondents Dinner is a huge social event for Washington, DC. The WHCA issued 2,620 tickets to journalists, celebrities, and lawmakers to celebrate the free press this year. The 2022 dinner will feature TV show host Trevor Noah and mark the media personality’s return after cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
