Republican Congressman Wants To Strip DOJ of Funding

( – Former President Donald Trump took to social media the day after his April 4 arraignment on his first criminal indictment on 34 counts in New York in April and demanded that Congressional Republicans “defund the DOJ and FBI until they come to their senses.” He charged that Democrats had “totally weaponized law enforcement” to “interfere with… elections.” On Tuesday, June 13, one GOP Congress member took up the former president’s call to action and wanted to strip the Department of Justice (DOJ) of funding.

Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) told Newsmax in an exclusive interview during an appearance on the outlet’s “American Agenda” program Tuesday evening that Congress needed to “restrict” DOJ funding to limit the political damage the agency can inflict by pursuing partisan, politically-based prosecutions. Mooney told the outlet, “It’s a very sad day for America when our own government is witch-hunting political opposition.”

Mooney went on to cite examples other than Trump where he believed the DOJ had overstepped and abused its authority. He included the FBI’s plan to “infiltrate” Catholic churches and the bureau’s past investigation of Moms for Liberty.

Moreover, Mooney compared the justice system under the current DOJ to that of a communist country like Cuba, where he said the system assumed defendants’ guilt unless someone could prove their innocence. The West Virginia lawmaker, who is running for the Senate seat currently held by Democrat Joe Manchin, declared, “That’s what they’re doing to President Trump here.”

He claimed the system was loading up the former president with charges in a partisan way, ignoring similar transgressions by Democratic leaders like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or President Joe Biden, both of whom have faced past questions about how they’ve handled classified materials but neither of whom have faced charges.

Regarding Congressional investigations of Biden and his family, Mooney said, “Turnabout is fair play.” He applauded fellow Republicans like James Comer (R-KY), Chair of the House Oversight Committee, Jim Jordan (R-OH), Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) for fighting “fire with fire” and using subpoena powers to coerce the DOJ and FBI into compliance.
