(LibertySons.org) – Experts sounded the alarms in May warning new generative AI tools could significantly impact the 2024 elections. So when former President Barack Obama sat down on June 15 with CNN’s David Axelrod of “The Axe Files” podcast to discuss technology and its role in democracy in light of advances that might change elections, the topic of establishing and using “digital fingerprints” emerged.
During their discussion about the explosion of cellular technology since 2007, Axelrod pointed out the ability of misinformation and disinformation to disrupt countries economically and mentioned he’d seen more than one deepfake of the former president. Obama said he was the first digital-age president, resulting in more recordings, photos, and videos of him than any other human at the time — a wealth of material for people who create deepfakes. Yet, the ex-POTUS proposed the need for technology to progress further and develop digital watermarks or fingerprints to help discriminating information consumers differentiate between real and deepfake news.

Like the experts in May, Obama warned, “the technology’s here now.” He said that despite the country’s past issues with misinformation, “this next election cycle will be worse.” Moreover, the host and his guest talked about how most people only obtain information from sources with which they agree and trust – – – a phenomenon some experts have labeled the echo chamber effect.
The polarization can skew objective facts, according to Obama, possibly discouraging people from voting by suggesting elites have rigged the systems, sowing cynicism — a move providing an advantage to those already in power.
Yet critics have pointed out how the former president promoted the now-debunked narrative that former President Donald Trump and Russia colluded together as a means of winning in 2016. Obama also received PolitiFact’s 2013 Lie of the Year award for repeatedly pitching the catchy political phrase, “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it.” The former president over-promised and under-delivered.
