Kevin McCarthy Breaks His Silence After Controversy

( – The US government had tens of thousands of hours worth of footage from January 6, 2021, the day Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to protest Joe Biden’s win. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) recently released all of that footage to Fox News. The Republican has finally explained why he did it.

Axios was the first to report on the Speaker’s bold move, noting that he shared 41,000 hours of security tape exclusively to Fox News host Tucker Carlson. The conservative host has been adamant about Congress releasing the footage and reportedly told Mike Allen of Axios, “there was never a legitimate reason” for the recordings to be kept from the public.

During his show on Fox News, Carlson announced McCarthy had granted his team access to the footage. The host mentioned they would be taking the “rest of the week” to review it, adding that his team will release details of the footage next week.

The New York Times recently claimed that McCarthy’s decision to grant Carlson exclusive access to the footage was predicted by his need to satisfy terms of an agreement he made with some Republican House members to secure enough votes to take over from outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). The Speaker spoke with the outlet during a phone interview following his decision. When the Times asked McCarthy why he released the footage, he said that he promised the American people that he would during the lead-up to the recent midterm elections.

Likewise, McCarthy told The New York Times he believed the tapes belong to the American public. McCarthy declared his belief that releasing the footage “lets everybody make their own judgment” about the events of January 6, 2021.

The New York Times concluded its report by noting that the Speaker intends to release the footage to other outlets outside of Fox News as well but said he was giving Carlson the first shot at covering it.
