Kamala Harris Rejects DeSantis’ Invitation

(LibertySons.org) – Vice President Kamala Harris visited Jacksonville, Florida, on July 21, to discuss her concerns about the Florida Department of Education’s (FLDOE’s) state academic standards for African-American history. She accused “so-called leaders” of banning books and replacing fact-based curricula with propaganda. In response, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) wrote a July 31 letter inviting the vice president’s return to his state to debate his administration’s investments in programs rooting out “hateful Marxist theories like ‘Critical Race Theory’” and “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” initiatives in classrooms. While Harris planned to return, she rejected the governor’s offer outright.

On August 1, Harris addressed the African Methodist Episcopal Women’s Missionary Convention in Orlando, echoing and building upon her previous allegations. She said she would accept “no roundtable, no lecture, no invitation […] to debate an undeniable fact: There were no redeeming qualities of slavery.”

Academic Standards published by the FLDOE ask teachers to examine the various trades and duties enslaved people performed, including agricultural work, domestic service, blacksmithing, carpentry, painting, transportation, and tailoring, with a focus on how slaves might have applied the skills they developed for their personal benefit. Another section, dealing with race riots in Atlanta, Tulsa, and Ocoee, asks teachers to instruct students about how African Americans both perpetrated and suffered acts of violence during these and similar events. Most scholars take issue with both lesson plans as inaccurate portrayals of fact.

Four of five Black Congressional Republicans have criticized the standards. Reps. John James (R-MI) and Wesley Hunt (R-TX) disputed that their ancestors received any “net benefit” from slavery. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) called on the FLDOE to “correct” the new standard. Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) told reporters freedom formed America’s foundation but pointed out slavery represented perhaps the greatest deprivation of freedom. He clarified how slavery was “really about” family separation and “devastating” dehumanizing acts that anyone running for president would surely acknowledge.

DeSantis claimed the new standards lead the nation in providing a superior level of African-American history, saying he was proud of the focus group’s work. The governor said Harris was initiating a needless controversy and spreading misinformation. The Florida strongman also pushed back against his GOP colleagues, asking them whether they really intended to side with the vice president and the mainstream media or the State of Florida.
