Barack Obama Is Quietly Meeting With Democrat Leaders

( – Former President Barack Obama called on his “Secretary of Explaining Things,” former President Bill Clinton, to help campaign in 2012. Clinton helped Obama face another campaign for the presidency as then-President Obama supported Democratic legislators in their reelection campaigns and actively ran the nation. Recently, Obama has quietly staged several meetings with House Democrats.

Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ), Haley Stevens (D-MI), and Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) number among those who’ve met with Obama in recent small gatherings of next-gen Democrats, according to POLITICO. While the former president is providing some coaching and advice, observers indicate he’s also keeping a finger on the pulse of the changing Democratic party as progressive young stars reportedly begin to rise and shine.

While none of the attendees could convey a distinct purpose for the Obama meetings to reporters, most agreed that one piece of advice came through clearly: the necessity to avoid appearing elitist. To that end, lawmakers like Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), a former car mechanic, and Ocasio-Cortez, a former bartender, shared stories with their colleagues about relating to base supporters. Multiple pundits are warning Democrats they need to focus on engaging working-class voters to win the next election.

Obama and his staff have informed the White House in advance of the meetings but kept them low-profile to avoid stepping on President Joe Biden’s toes, especially as his approval numbers remain low at 42.4% for June 26, according to the Real Clear Politics average of polls. Yet, Obama may be signaling his desire to take a more active role in campaigning for the incumbent and the Democratic party in general.

Moreover, political observers have said the Biden administration is walking a tightrope with regard to offers of help from the former president. On the one hand, Obama tends to be more dynamic and better-spoken than Biden, who has displayed a lifelong affinity for gaffes. On the other hand, critics accuse the former president of running a shadow administration or plotting to replace Biden.

For now, pundits can only guess whether Biden will choose to appoint Obama as his own “Secretary of Explaining Things” for the 2024 election cycle.
