Americans Divided Over Trump Indictment

( – The March 30 indictment of Donald Trump came as a shock to many Americans. However, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s decision shouldn’t have been a complete surprise since the former president had recently warned his supporters that his arrest was imminent. The country appears divided regarding its response to the news that, for the first time in history, a former President of the United States will face criminal prosecution.

Noted polling agency Ipsos recently conducted a survey of Americans’ opinions regarding Trump’s indictment. A plurality of voters, 45%, said they thought the former president should have been charged in this case. On the flip side, 32% said they thought Trump shouldn’t face charges, and 23% said they didn’t know.

As one might expect, the poll showed the long-standing fracture between Democrats and Republicans on important issues. A total of 87% of Democrats said they viewed the charges as serious, while only 29% of Republicans said the same. Independents were split, with 43% saying they were serious to 41% saying they weren’t.

The indictment stems from allegations that the former president had his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, send a payment of $130,000 to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, also known by her legal name Stephanie Clifford, in exchange for her silence about an affair the pair allegedly had. According to ABC News, a source they claim is familiar with the sealed indictment declared the former president faces two dozen counts.

An astonishing 43% of Americans believe the former president should put his 2024 campaign on hold, while 35% believe the recent indictment shouldn’t have any effect on his campaign. Unlike most Republicans, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson recently told ABC News that he believed that Trump should close his presidential campaign. Coincidentally (or not), he tossed his hat in the ring for the 2024 Republican nomination during that same interview.
