One Dead After 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Mexico

(LibertySons.org) – People along Mexico’s Pacific coastline rushed out of their homes in the middle of the night after an earthquake rumbled the ground on September 22. The 6.8 magnitude event came only days after a 7.6 magnitude tremor hit the area on September 19, which claimed two lives. At least one more person died as a result of this most recent natural event.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said in a post on Twitter the September 22nd quake was an aftershock from the one on the 19th. The larger event led to structural damage and landslides. It also triggered a tsunami warning.

Both earthquakes came from the Michoacan area on the Pacific coast. The one confirmed death on the 22nd was a woman in Mexico City who fell while trying to move outside. She suffered a fatal head injury. Another lost life possibly triggered by the event was a resident who suffered a heart attack in the aftermath. Authorities did not report significant damage this time around.

September 19 is a common date for this type of natural disaster in the nation, with previous events occurring in 1985 and 2017. The country even holds a national drill on the 19th in memory of the 1985 incident, which resulted in the deaths of around 9,500. This year’s occurrence happened less than an hour after the test, making some residents initially wonder if the alarms were real. People said the tremors started rather slowly but built up with time and seemed to rumble on for a while.
